Live Day 7: Brazilian Bronze

Hits: 87

WINTERTHUR. Even the massive home crowd wasn’t enough to lift Switzerland to the win. The hosts looked flat never really firing in the game. In fairness Brazil were on fire obviously pumped for the win. Although the win was in four straight sets, the game wasn’t as decisive as the scoreline suggests. Switzerland were outplayed on the day by another world class team. Joy and sadness stood side by side in stadium Schützenwiese after the match this afternoon.

Brazilian Bronze

The host team, and the city of Winterthur have put on a beautiful tournament for us.  Hopefully Switzerland will be able to feel pride in their acheivements over the week and use the experience to make their game even better. Malik Müller, defender for Switzerland following the match said that „We just didn’t get our performance right on the field. In the first three sets our setting was terrible and was our main problem in the match. We are very disappointed“.

The first set was full of excitement. Brazil scored the first point and was quickly 6-3 up. Switzerland fought back and were 9:8 up but couldn’t hold on to win the set. Unfortunately #6 Jan Meier hit the ball out gifting the point to Brazil. The second set saw Switzerland in the front again 9:7 but the Brazillians were calm under pressure and took the set  11:9. The third set saw Switzerland fight back again to 6:6 but the host team seemed to be constantly chasing the Brazilian side and never looked as though they had enough fight to claw ahead. The fourth set was similar to the third and Switzerland couldn’t hold on to take a win.

The Brazilian team had moments of brilliance, fighting to win the ball and capitalising on their hard work with powerful attacking.  Brazil had a greater degree of power in the strike and Switzerland just made it too easy for them to defend the ball. Rodrigo Sprandel, Brazil’s attacker could hardly believe it: „we have been fourth at the last events and now we finally have a medal.  It is amazing but we didn’t think it would be so easy against Switzerland“

Switzerland will now have to wait another four years until they get the chance to fight for the World Championship gold again!

Brazil – Switzerland  4-0 (11:8, 11:9, 11:8, 11:9)

Italy won 3-2 against Chile today. While they took the first set, Chile came right back at them in the second to even the scores with the best set margin of the day. Italy managed to re-set after the second and came back to win the next two sets and take the game. Italy are now the fifth ranked team in the world and Chile the 6th.

Italy won the match for 5th against Chile

For Italy these World Championships had highs and lows. They won the matches they had to win but did not play their best against the top nations. Chile played a good tournament. They even almost won against Austria in the double elimination round. That was probably the best match they played at this World Championships.

Except for the second set Chile never really looked as though they were in the game.  The South American team and Italy have had a reasonably even competition and Chile has played really well at times particualrly in their match with Austria where they took the finalists to five sets. Today Chile looked a bit flat and Italy played the better game in the important phases of the match winning 3:1.

Simon Prudenziati the Italian captain said after the match: „These World Championships have had highs and lows for us. We won the matches we had to win but we could not play our best against the top teams. Our goal was to reach 5th place and so we are very happy with the result. We prepared for this goal for the last two years. The match against Chile was very tense. It was a tight victory that we are very happy about.“

Namibia have been one of the surprising teams of this tournament. Coming into the elimination rounds the top of Group D with no set losses, they have continued to play outstanding fistball. Argentina on the otherhand had a harder run and were not able to win any of their preliminary round games. They had their first win in double elimination against Namibia on Wednesday.

Argentina win straight sets

As with the previous match between The USA and Czech Republic, Argentina were in the top eight group coming in to this competition and Namibia in the bottom ten. Namibia were very strong in their group and played fabulous fistball against the USA in doube elimination to beat them 3:2

Argentinian Defender Federico Gerardo Fritz said after the game „we aimed for fifth but we lost some important matches and so this didn’t work out. Our team is still very young and this is why we failed at certain key moments. In today’s game against Namibia we played well as a team and Namibia also had a good game. The atmosphere here is amazing , it has been overwhelming for us“

In a reversal of their match on Wednesday The Czech Republic beats the USA 3-2. Both teams have had a great tournament but with the Americans coming into the match today the favourites they will not be able to help but be disappointed. The Czech Republic finish in 9th place and the USA 10th.

The Czech Republic take the win

With team USA ranked in the top eight and The Czech Republic in the bottom ten at the beginning of this competition. it was always going to be hard for the Czech side to win. They proved their determination however playing valiently against the North American team and even after their fourth set 11:1 defeat, kept their focus taking the game.

The Czech team has continued to improve throughout the championships refining their technical skills from what we saw at the beginning of the week. Conversely, America seems to be lacking the spark they had earlier and that we saw when they played Germany on Wednesday night

Mat Ogin, team captain for the USA said „we don’t get to play at this level very often. In the end it is more about what you learn from a tournament like this than where you rank and we have learned a lot“

Austria have forced Brazil into the Bronze medal match in spectacular fashion. Bringing everything to the field they convincingly beat Brazil at the semi-final match in stadium Schützenwiese this evening. Is this the team that can knock Germany off it’s perch? I have a feeling lots of people here would like to see Austria do just that in the final tomorrow evening.

Karl Müllehner, who had an amazing game tonight, said after the match „ the game was incredible, the fans were standing at out backs. It felt like we were performing at home with the crowd behind us in this way. It was as though we had a sixth player on the field. We almost feel like we have already played the final“
